Just get it from CarMax with a warranty.

It’ll pay for itself.

I agree. I have always liked the way they look and their relatively good off-road capability.

You’d actually be surprised, especially if you convert it to coils.

I’ve been eyeing one for years (now eyeing an LR4). The reliability isn’t as bad as you think and from memory are quite a bit better than a rangie

‘07-’08 are actually pretty decent. There’s still air suspension to worry about but as thebloody said you can convert to coils. Just avoid the stupid V6.

That isn’t that ironic when you consider how unreliable they are

Better than a RR for sure but are they as good as a Jeep? Or Land Cruiser?

I had a 2006 for 4 years, perhaps I can shine some light on them. I had an SE with the 4.0L V6. I put about 50k on it during that time, and sold it with about 110k on it.

I loved it.

It is still my benchmark for comfortable vehicles. The 2nd row had heated seats which my passengers liked, the 3rd row was spacious (even if you lost almost all luggage capacity), and the height adjustment was great for off road and parking garages. The visibility was great and the turn radius was amazing for city driving.

I took mine off road a few times, nothing serious though. The most fun I had was during the Chicago blizzard of 2010, when my wife and I put it into off road mode and cruised through down town surveying all the abandoned cars. Thanks to the high clearance and lack of solid axles, deep snow (20") was nothing.

The negative: the air ride suspension has numerous well known issues. The compressor is a known problem area and the air coils and lines can spring their own leaks. I didn’t have the problem, but I think one was starting when I sold it. This can be easily remediated by swapping in traditional coils though.

Coils would also fix the most annoying issue, which was if you had any kind of fault or your battery was down in power, the truck would go into “limp mode” which basically meant you were riding on the bump stops. Low voltage would also trigger a “transmission fault” indicator making you think your truck was done for. Obviously this should have been designed better. My truck had a seal blow out on the front differential that resulted in me needing to replace it. Why they made the seal non-serviceable, I don’t know. I luckily found a used one for $750. Combined with a bunch of suspension work (bushings, etc) I ended up getting freaked out about impending costs and sold it.

All in all, I would love to have one again, providing I either got a full warranty, or could get it cheap enough to not worry about those costs. I would swap in the coils, which would eliminate the air suspension issues, and have nice quality truck to play with.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks I think you answered just about any questions I would have on the LR3. Driving through 20' of snow no problem is very impressive.

The coils are a good idea but I think I would probably pull a Doug and get a caramel warranty if I ever bought a LR3/LR4

Same here. If you want to use it off road, the coils give much needed reliability, otherwise the height control was great. I could drop it to the ground to get my grandma in or fit into a parking garage, then jack it way up to go over obstacles.

I don't know if the LR4 fixed any of the issues, or if it was just a model name change, but I am really anticipating the new Discovery.

I imagine it was more or less just a model name change. They seem to be very similar

I know the engine and transmission are different, and I believe the interior is more luxurious on the LR4. I actually really liked the Spartan interior on the LR3. Gave a sense that you could actually use it as a truck.

Poor guy. Having to “suffer” with a cool Land Rover. You think he would realize it is the perfect car for his hobby. Moreover you think he would realize by driving the LR3 he is saving the environment by not wasting energy, building materials, and resources on driving a newer car.

He would honestly prefer an old Geo Tracker. Or no car at all.

You cannot comprehend the degrees to which he isn’t a car person. And a tracker is the same as a Suzuki Sidekick.
